Dumars speaks

Pistons president and General Manager Joe Dumars held his annual media session this afternoon and said pretty much exactly what you’d expect: Disappointed. Not good enough. Need to get back to Pistons basketball. As far as I can tell, there is no transcript of the session, but here are some highlights from the beat writers and other media that were in attendance.

Via the Detroit News:

“Not only was it tough, but it was a learning experience,” he said. “Teams beat us physically and were mentally tougher than us. That’s doesn’t work for the Detroit Pistons.”

He acknowledged while injuries played a part, it wasn’t enough to cloud his judgment, and also said his timeline for success needs to be immediate.

“I’ve never sat here and spoke of a three-year or five-year plan,” Dumars said, adding he’ll evaluate every player to see who fits the profile of his vision. “You start thinking about what changes need to be made here.”

Not mentioned, of course, were that two of the main culprits of this softening, and lack of defensive identity were the defensive no-shows of expensive new additions Ben Gordon and Charlive Villanueva.

He did mention his free agen prizes later on, though:

Via the Detroit Free Press:

“I wish we could have gotten more from Ben and Charlie, but they were both fighting injuries and adjusting to a new situation,” he said. “I really think both of them will be better this year.”

Dumars, as expected, praised first-year head coach John Kuester, didn’t rule out bringing back both or either of Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, and said that the way to right the wrongs of last season’s embarassment is the No. 7 pick in the draft (from same Free Press account):

“The key with that pick, and with any player we add to this team, is that we have to find guys that can fit into the type of team we want,” he said. “We know there are several players out there with the basketball skills to help us at No. 7, but until we get them in here, work them out and talk to them, we don’t know which of them are going to be a good fit for us.
