While there is speculation every offseason that Michigan State’s Tom Izzo is going to coach Team X, this latest news has me more worried. According to ESPN, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, an MSU grad, has offered the head-coaching job to Izzo.
Izzo tried to quell the inevitable speculation about joining the Cavs in a recent interview with ESPN.com’s Andy Katz, saying: “I don’t have an interest [in the NBA] until I win another championship.”
He did appear to offer some hope of a future jump to the pros when he told Katz that “I’ll never say never.” Yet Izzo quickly added: “My name always comes up [for NBA jobs], but that doesn’t mean they’ve talked to you.”
The fact that it is Cleveland trying to woo Izzo worries me for a few reasons: 1. Gilbert is an owner who has proven he will spend whatever it takes on players 2. He would be able to make an “offer I couldn’t refue” to Izzo and 3. The chance of coaching LeBron James to his first championship.
In the post Flip Saunders-era a lot of Pistons fans have made the case that Dumars should hire Izzo. The successs of former college coaches in the NBA is spotty at best, but there is no denying that Izzo is certainly one of the best there is; and Michael Curry and John Kuester havn’t exactly lit the world on fire, either.
Here is hoping Izzo says no thanks and brings a few more championships to East Lansing … then he can make a short hop over to the Palace to begin a successful NBA coaching career.
