Cousins wants to land in Detroit

Just how aggressive will the Pistons be leading up to the Thursday’s NBA draft? Dumars has never been known for agressiveness  during the NBA draft or for in-season trades. He generally builds a team, spends his free agent money and then nibbles around the edges to fill a gap in the rotation or solidify his bench. He seems like an exeuctive who has a gameplan and doesn’t let short-term circumstances upend his long-term vision.

But there are signs that the Pistons, coming off a woeful season where they missed the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, is willing to make moves that will land them the marquee player they feel they need. The latest evidence are dual reports from ESPN’s Andy Katz and Johnathan Givony from Draft Express.

Both Katz and Givony have written that Cousins has signaled that he prefers to land in Detroit, with Katz writing that Cousins spent “two secretive days with the Pistons two weeks ago, but Detroit knows it probably will have to trade up to get him.” So is Dumars willing to swing a trade with Philly, Minnesota or Sacremento in order to move up and grab the controversial Kentucky center?

Givony tweets that Detroit is “making a major push to trade w/Minnesota to get Cousins with the 4th pick.” And in another tweet says that Golden State, who Cousins refused to work out for and who sits one spot above the Pistons at No. 6 have said they will not let Cousins slip past them if he is available, so it does appear the Pistons will need to swing a trade to land the player they want.

I can’t imagine that, armed with some cheap quality talent like Rodney Stuckey, Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko along with the No. 7 pick and the expiring contract of Tayshaun Prince, the Pistons wouldn’t have the opportunity to make a trade — they’ll just have to be willing to swallow an undesireable longer-term deal (to add to the pile) in the process.
