The Detroit Pistons were able to address their woeful lack of depth at the shooting guard position by signing free agent Tracy McGrady to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum.

Wait a second … they don’t need help at shooting guard. Perhaps he is signed to play small forward. Oh wait, they already have Tayshaun Prince and the emerging Austin Daye and Jonas Jerebko manning that position.

You can definitely file this one under “Huh?” or perhaps the always popular, “Whaaa?” but apparently it is true.

The Detroit News is reporting as if it practically a done deal and Jonathan Givony of Draft Express is saying it IS a done deal. And Joe Dumars is telling the Oakland Press it is definitely NOT a done deal. But as they say, where there is smoke, there is fire.

Pistons fans can look at this development in one of two ways. The less charitable way would be as if this were Allen Iverson 2.0 and adding a player at a position of strength who demands the ball in his hands and plenty of playing time that will inevitably destroy what little team chemistry remains in Motown.

The more charitable view, however, would be that Joe Dumars wouldn’t make such a move unless he was extremely confident and committed to lessening the logjam that currently exists at the shooting guard/small forward positions.

Does this move portend the eventual move of either or both of Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton? Does this mean the move is more likely to happen prior to the season starting and not closer to the trade deadline after the respective players have had a chance to “rebuild their trade value”? I certainly don’t know, but the move definitely makes you think.
