Game 14 of 82

The Pistons were able to tip the equally mediocre Washington Wizards in overtime with a steady diet of the old and little of the new as Jason Maxiell started at power forward for sharp shooter Austin Daye and Richard Hamilton flashed some of his vintage skills, scoring all but one of the Pistons’ 13 points in the OT period.

I expect to see a lot more of Austin Daye tonight even though the Mavericks have some muscle down low in the form of Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood, and one of the best-scoring big man in the game in Dirk Nowitzki.

While it’s tough to beat an top-tier team, the Pistons at least are facing a team that plays at their equally sluggish pace, and won’t have to worry about being run out of the gym or giving up 20+ fastbreak points and the Mavs’ interior scoring appears to be minimal.

But if Dirk has a Pau-esque game, this one could be a laugher early. And to make sure that doesn’t happen, I think Charlie Villanueva is going to have a lot on his plate. Physically, he can match up with Nowitzski, but mentally he’ll need to be at the top of his game.

Here is what I want out of tonight: Less than 12 assists for Jason Kidd. More than three 3-point field goals for Austin Daye. Less than 45 percent shooting from Nowitzki. More than 10 shots for Ben Gordon and less than 50 points in the paint for Dallas.
