Pistons could be integral to Nuggets sending Carmelo Anthony to Nets

It seems I’ve missed the biggest story of the Pistons season so far — the Detroit Pistons(!) are integral to the success of the trade of Carmelo Anthony to the Nuggets(!!) and it seems the player most likely to be shipped out of Detroit would be Richard Hamilton(!!!).

Although this megatrade would involve a few zillion moving parts here are the keys — Denver would give up Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups and get back Derrick Favors and Devin Harris and a bunch of first-round picks; the Nets would give up Favors Harris and the expiring contract of Troy Murphy and get back Anthony, Billups, Richard Hamilton and a first-round pick; and Detroit would give up Hamilton a first-round pick and get back Murphy’s expiring contract.

There are two things holding up this deal, however, and they are quite big impediments. 1. The Pistons don’t want to have to give up what is likely to be an extremely high first-round pick in the upcoming draft. 2. Even if the trade is agreed upon, Anthony has to agree to a contract extension with the New Jersey Nets.

I know the Pistons are desperate to unload Hamilton, but the team is likely, which currently has the seventh-worst record in the league, is going to have another high lottery pick and really needs young building blocks.

If the Pistons could lottery-protect the pick, I’m sure they would agree. But I can see why they are gun shy.

There will be much more on this story as it becomes available.
