Either Carmelo Anthony and agent Leon Rose have a very poor working relationship or this behind-the-scenes bluster is less than it seems, but sources are indicating that Denver Nuggets’ Carmelo Anthony is slowing down the proposed trade to the New Jersey Nets and has told nobody that he would be willing to sign a contract extension with the team.
ESPN talks to several unnamed sources who, the site indicates, are close confidants of the mercurial superstar.
According to several league sources, Anthony has not told anyone, not even his representatives, that he will sign a contract extension with the Nets.
It doesn’t get anymore clear than that. However, it stretches plausibility that his reps would spend so many months working with the Nets and Nuggets to craft several possible deals without some type of assurance that Anthony would give the pact a thumbs up.
But sources are sources, and their comments are pretty damning:
“He has not agreed to go to New Jersey,” said the source, who speaks regularly with Anthony. “I have never heard him, in all the times we’ve talked, say he’s willing to go to New Jersey. Not once. Personally, I would be stunned if he went there and signed an extension.”
“He [Rose] may want him to go there,” one source said. “But Melo doesn’t want to be in Jersey. He wants to play in New York.”
