Assist Charts 2010-11: Jason Maxiell

This is the latest installment of a series called “Assist Charts.” For each of the 13 Pistons who played this year, I’m going to show whom they assisted and who assisted them.

Each post will be divided into two sections: Player assists to and Assists from player. Player assists to shows who the featured player assisted. Assists from player shows who assisted the featured player.

Each section will display two pie graphs and corresponding tables. One graph and table will show totals, and the other set will show per 36 minutes.

All the graphs and tables are color-coded with a specific color assigned to each player throughout the series. Point guards are blue. Shooting guards are orange. Small forwards are green. Power forwards are red. Centers are yellow.

What we learned

Jason Maxiell isn’t really an adept passer, even considering his position. Still, his .38 assists per 36 minutes with Richard Hamilton is decently high. Maybe there’s a little chemistry between the two players who’ve spent the last six years playing together.

What we learned

Nobody assisted Jason Maxiell more than Richard Hamilton, which supports the idea above that the two have a chemistry together.

If the Pistons hire Rick Adelman, Greg Monroe, and maybe to a lesser degree Ben Wallace and Chris Wilcox, will pass more out of the high post. Maxiell certainly wouldn’t fill that role, but if he wants to finally earn a regular spot in the rotation, he’d have to complement it.

Although undersized, Maxiell plays like a typical big man. He doesn’t show many skills outside the paint. That might explain why, in order, his assists came point guards then shootings guards then small forwards then bigs. Perhaps, the Pistons didn’t ask Maxiell to make the cuts that would lead to bigs assisting him. But maybe that’s not in his skillset. If the latter is true, that wouldn’t bode well for Maxiell fitting into Adelman’s offense.
