Former president of the New York Knicks and CEO of Madison Square Garden Dave Checketts has been hired to serve as a consultant to new Pistons owner Tom Gores. This is not earth-shattering news, but I wanted to address it just in case it made fans think that Joe Dumars’ position or future with the team was somehow in jeopardy. Without having any direct knowledge, I would tell people not to read anything into this move as it seems to me more geared toward hiring someone that has an all-encompassing view of the management of a professional sports team and top-notch concert venue. One thing that struck me about Tom Gores’ introductory press conference was how he kept coming back to the notion of maximizing the potential of the Palace Sports and Entertainment company as a draw for concerts. Well in Cheketts you have someone that was head of what might be the most well-known concert venue in the United Sates. Joe Dumars is a basketball man and that’s all he is. And that’s all he should be. As Gores figures out the entities he recently spent a considerable amount of money on it only makes sense to bring in people well-versed in such enterprises.
