Walker Russell, a former point guard at Jacksonville State and a mainstay of the NBA Development League for the past five years, has been invited to training camp by the Detroit Pistons, according to NBA D-League blog Ridiculous Upside.
While he might be the longest of long shots due to the guard-heavy roster composition of the Detroit Pistons, it’s hard not to root for a guy like Russell. Take it away Ridiculous Upside:
The veteran playmaker is averaging 20.3 points and 11 assists through the first three games of the season, moving himself into sixth all-time with 969 career assists in the D-League. All-time records aren’t something one ever wants to achieve in the D-League, though, so it’s a good thing Russell is headed to NBA camp this weekend.
Russell has also helped his teammates while racking up all of his assists as three other Mad Ants have been given training camp opportunities. Forward Darnell Lazare will be with the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Northern Arizona rookie Cameron Jones will be in camp with the Miami Heat and Ron Howard has once again earned a look from the Milwaukee Bucks.
