Visualizing What David Stern Just Did to Chris Paul

Twitter has been abuzz with the news that NBA Commissioner David Stern has taken his rep as a ruthless, take-no-prisoners commissioner to new levels with the debacle that is the league-owned New Orleans Hornets and its attempts to trade superstar point guard Chris Paul.

Stern has already decided to cancel a three-way trade between the Hornets, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers, and another trade between the Hornets and the Los Angeles Clippers. First, there was uproar among small-market owners (including the comically petulant Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert) about the Lakers getting another superstar in what they considered a lopsided deal.

“It’s not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons,” according to league spokesman Mike Bass.

Ahhh … “basketball reasons.”

Now it seems instead of making the best of a bad situation, the NBA is doubling down on its petulance as it is demanding what amounts to the Clippers’ five best trade assets, Eric Gordon, Eric Bledsoe, Al-Farouq Aminu, the expiring contract of Chris Kaman and an unprotected first-round pick from the bumbling Minnesota Timberwolves.

Dozens, maybe hundreds of NBA writers have spilled and will spill thousands upon thousands of  words about why this is a travesty for the league. About how this is the final nail in Stern’s legacy. About how this move is more irresponsible than the lockout we all just had to live through. Instead of writing all that, though, I prefer … a funny photo I made. After all, they say that pictures are worth a thousand words.
