Vernon Macklin: ‘I was out of shape – like, real out of shape’

David Mayo of MLive:

“I just took a part of a lot of our front-court guys, like Max (Jason Maxiell), Body (Ben Wallace), Greg (Monroe) and those guys, and just chased the ball,” Macklin said. “Every time I saw it come off the rim, I just tried to locate the ball and go up there and rebound and get it.”

Macklin said Pistons teammates kept in touch and “encouraged me while I was down there, so I wouldn’t be down,” and Walker D. Russell – who began the season in Fort Wayne before earning a full-season contract with the Pistons – came down last week to visit and retrieve some belongings he still had there.

He said the first challenge was regaining conditioning.

“The first three or four games, I was out of shape – like, real out of shape,” he said.

First of all, I love that Vernon Macklin channeled Jason Maxiell, Ben Wallace and Greg Monroe. That’s something good teams can do with regularity, and hopefully younger Pistons get in the habit of emulating their polished older teammates.

As far as Macklin’s conditioning admission, hopefully he’s ready to play in the NBA now. I want him to get a shot this season, assuming he’s done everything the Pistons have asked him to do. Getting into shape appears to be a step in that direction.

At minimum, though, Macklin’s return provided a light moment in a long season. Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News:

Teammates Austin Daye and Ben Wallace led the playful chiding chant of "swag, swag, swag" as he was being interviewed by media Sunday, hours after he landed in Miami
