Jonas Jerebko will play for Swedish National Team after all

In the spring, reports surfaced that Jonas Jerebko wouldn’t play for Sweden in this summer’s European Championships. It turns out Jerebko has reconsidered. From Jerebko’s website:

Jonas Jerebko is pleased to announce that he will be playing with the Swedish National Team in this summer’s Qualification Round for Eurobasket 2013.  ”In the first weeks following the 2011-12 NBA season of 66 games in just 4 months, I was unable to fully commit to the National Team this summer.  But my body has responded very well to the summer break, and I discussed the matter in further detail with the Pistons.  I recognized that the opportunity to represent my country was too good to pass up.  Playing in the Eurobasket Qualifying Round will allow me to play competitive basketball during the offseason, and I am thrilled to continue playing a leading role in the advancement of Swedish basketball, which has such a bright future.  I want to sincerely thank the Pistons’ President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, Head Coach Lawrence Frank, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Arnie Kander for their complete support in making this important decision.

“I look forward to joining my teammates in July as we compete to qualify for Sweden’s first Eurobasket appearance in a decade.”

I’m glad Jerebko is playing if that’s what he wants to do and glad that the organization is supporting him, although I’m sure they’d undoubtedly prefer he rest and train for the season here. Jerebko’s participation has to be a huge deal in Sweden, so I’m sure his country is extremely happy to have him playing.
