On Saturday, October 6, the Detroit Pistons will hold their first public scrimmage at nearby Oakland University. The open scrimmage will take place in the university’s Athletic Center Arena, or O’Rena, from noon to 1PM, and will be free for all fans and OU students. There will also be pre-event activities including a meet-and-greet with all of the team’s performance teams (Detroit Pistons Cheer Team, Automotion, Drumline), interviews with Mason (the team’s announcer), and an interactive hoops truck.
Pistons’ president of basketball operations Joe Dumars had this to say about the event:
“The open practice is a great event where our fans can come out and get a preview of this year’s team. Our players and coaching staff have been working hard to get ready for the upcoming season and we look forward to getting started.”
The Pistons have come to the O’Rena before, and while it was fun to watch the team practice and interact with fans, this season’s event should be even more intriguing considering the team’s youth and subsequently, their chemistry together.
Most Detroiters watched the Pistons when they were winning 55-60 games, but after a few rough seasons, the team saw a decline in followers. This type of event, in addition to putting out a better product, will surely bring some fans back. Individual players on the team should also bring fans into the O’Rena.
With only 30+ college and a handful of summer league games to gauge his abilities, fans will finally see what progress rookie big man Andre Drummond has made. The 19-year old has been open to learning at every opportunity from his coaches and teammates; will that show in the scrimmages? With the season starting just 25 days after the event, hopefully he can show some growth as a player.
The team’s trio of Greg Monroe, Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey are also playing in the exhibition, giving fans a look into what Pistons’ management becomes the team’s core for the upcoming season.
Ukrainian import Slava Kravtsov should also be playing, and considering how little is known about him by even the most diehard Pistons fan, it’ll be interesting to see what he can do.
After the event, check back with Life On Dumars for pictures from the scrimmage!
