Brandon Knight has been around as a Piston long enough for everyone to understand what he is at this point: he’s a shoot-first point guard still learning the position who was a bit turnover prone and not pass-happy enough as a rookie. But combined with that, he has a mature personality and a work ethic that everyone raves about.
So basically, no one really agrees on what, exactly, his ceiling is. But I think most everyone — Knight supporters and detractors alike — would agree that he’ll absolutely maximize his ability because of how hard he works, whatever his actual limits talent-wise might be. Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press wrote about Knight’s offseason, including this tidbit:
Knight promises that fans will see a vocal leader when the season begins later this month. As evidence, observers say Knight has set a tone this off-season, organizing a minicamp with full participation shortly before the start of training camp. Practices start today.
When I had the chance to interview Knight over the summer, it was easy to root for him because of how much he clearly wants to be a really good point guard. I’m still not willing to bet on how good he’ll be, but other than Andre Drummond, there’s no young player on the Pistons I’m more excited to watch this season.
