Pistons reveal final four name possibilities for Grand Rapids D-League affiliate

The NBA D-League website writes:

The fans have spoken! GR D-League is excited to announce the top 4 team names from our recent “Name the Team” contest. Fans are encouraged to not only vote for their favorite name, but give us feedback on their selections.

  • Blue Racers
  • Chairmen
  • Drive
  • Horsepower

Fan voting is open between May 1-10, and these were the four choices out of the numerous fan suggestions over the past month or so for the new Grand Rapids team. The names are, um, well, not good. Not that they’re all terrible, but they’re just so bland. The team is obviously shooting for a name related to the Pistons and Detroit, and Drive and Horsepower fit that bill.

But Blue Racers and Chairman? Puhhhhlease.

As a lover of Grand Rapids, it’s kind of a bummer that the team names are so bland. At the same time, as long as they avoid the weirdly-chosen name Chairman or the oddly specific Blue Racers, the auto-related names will work well enough. I’d be down with the Chairman only if their hypothetical logo was a red, white and blue Carrot Top head and the Blue Racers would be fun if their logo was a snake driving a car.

In all seriousness, I think Drive fit the best with the Pistons’ theme while also working as a basketball term.  Horsepower could be cool, but only if they forced those poor saps to make every night retro night by wearing the teal and red Pistons jerseys from the 90s.

With Grand Rapids calling itself Beer City U.S.A. and all, I thought the Grand Rapids Growlers, like a bottle of beer, would be a cool theme. The logo being an angry bear/animal with a growler beer bottle in hand. It makes sense that the NBA and team would want to avoid alcohol-centric names, though.

You can vote for your favorite, official option here. What do you guys think?
