Stan Van Gundy agrees in principle to five-year, $35 million contract with Pistons

Marc Stein of ESPN:

ESPN sources say Pistons & Stan Van Gundy have reached agreement in principle to make SVG their new coach/president of basketball ops

Pistons & SVG reach agreement in principle on five-year deal worth estimated $35 mil and are on course for official announcement this week

Wow, that moved quickly, though it wasn’t unexpected the way Van Gundy alienated the Warriors. Thinking rationally, he wouldn’t have done that unless he knew the Pistons would offer a package he preferred.

Getting control of basketball operations and that salary is a pretty nice package.

I love what Van Gundy will bring to the bench, and he’s definitely among the top-line coaches I’ve been begging the Pistons to include in their searches. The only way to do that is show a willingness to pay, and kudos to Tom Gores for stepping up.

I’m uneasy on Van Gundy in the front office, a new venture for him. He’ll need help there, and his general-manager hire will be crucial. (Please not Otis Smith.)

I can get behind Van Gundy as team president for two reasons, though:

1. There isn’t a can’t-miss executive available who would definitely be better. Plenty of people appear more qualified to fill that job, but nobody available has a strong enough résumé that assures they’ll do it better than Van Gundy will.

2. He’s definitely bringing a good coach with him – Van Gundy himself.
