George David resigns, Pistons hire Al Walker and Art Luptowski

Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press:

I gather #Pistons assistant GM George David is no longer with the organization.

For more clarity, David officially resigned as #Pistons assistant GM. Announcement expected later.

Ken Berger of CBSSports:

David, promoted to player personnel director in ’07, turned down Van Gundy’s offer to potentially stay on in a similar role in the future.

Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today:

Pistons basketball ops news: Stan Van Gundy hired Al Walker as pro personnel scout & Art Luptowski as team’s advanced scout

Surprisingly, this sounds as if David actually resigned rather than using it as a term to smooth the transition – though I don’t know what “potentially stay on in a similar role in the future” actually means.

David served as the Pistons’ assistant general manager the last two years under Joe Dumars and had been an employee of the organization for 18 years. I thought David had a chance to be retained, but it’s important Stan Van Gundy is comfortable with his staff – and vice versa.

Best of luck to David wherever he lands. It’s definitely a little sad whenever such familiar faces depart, but if I can get over the Pistons declining Chauncey Billups’ team option, I can get over this.

Titles can vary by organization, but it sounds as if Walker and Luptowski will fill roles beneath the one David just left. That means more hires will likely be on the way.

Walker was a scout for the Magic under Van Gundy.

Luptowski leaves his post as head coach American International College in Massachusetts. He and Van Gundy share roots coaching small-school teams in the Northeast.
