The NBA ranked owners, and Tom Gores placed No. 19.

This is right in the range where Stan Van Gundy ranked as coach and Van Gundy and Jeff Bower ranked as executives. It’s also, not coincidentally, where the Pistons ranked when combining these measures.

That tells me these rankings are probably too influenced by team performance this season – which is understandable. Rating these people is not easy, and we don’t have much information for dividing credit and blame.

But all indications are Gores has improved significantly since buying the team. As it should be. He’s a smart guy, and he should get even better with more experience.

I’d hardly be surprised if we look back at this No.-19 ranking a few years from now and find it far too low.

By the way, sometimes-nemesis Dan Gilbert is ranked two spots higher. Because owning a team located near LeBron James’ birthplace makes you a decent owner.
