Ken Berger of CBSSports.com on the Pelicans firing Monty Williams:

"But league sources pointed out Tuesday that the people whose names were on the press release may not be the ones making the decision. Former Pistons executive Joe Dumars, a Louisiana native, has been providing input with the team and has a close relationship with Loomis and owner Tom Benson."

The Pelicans needn’t hire Dumars to consult him, and this won’t necessarily lead to a job. Remember Phil Jackson with the Pistons?

But with Mickey Loomis firing Monty Williams, this opens questions about Dumars’ role in the decision – and Dumars’ possibly joining the Pelicans.

Remember, Dumars reportedly talked shop with Loomis at New Orleans Saints games. Dumars and Loomis are friends, and it’s unclear where the line between friendly discussion and professional input begins and ends.

Can we count this as yet another coach Dumars has fired? Not based on what we know now, but that could change.
