We’ve gotten another week in the books this NBA season, and we’ve entered a stage of more or less utter chaos in the league, aside from at the very top where the usual suspects still reside.

Maybe the biggest surprise of all so far is the fact that in the universally derided Eastern Conference, there are only four teams below the .500 mark. Two of those teams are the perhaps historically bad Philadelphia 76ers and the depressing Brooklyn Nets, with one win between them, and the other two teams are the Orlando Magic and the New York Knicks.

Both of those teams are just one game below .500 and have shown flashes of being better than expected this season.

In the Western Conference, seven teams are below .500, and only one of those is within one game of that mark. The New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers, with a combined three wins, bring up the bottom out west.

While it’s early, and the Pelicans may rise in the standings as the season goes on, the days of the Eastern Conference being a laughingstock as a whole may be over. The elite teams of the NBA still play out west, but top-to-bottom the east is able to hang better this season that they have in years.

And with that, let’s once again embrace the early season chaos, and begin our Piston Powered NBA Power Rankings.
