The Detroit Pistons have lost a member of their family as it was announced that former head coach George Irvine died after a five year battle with cancer.

Sad news Detroit Pistons’ fans, we’ve lost a member of our Piston family.

It was announced that former coach George Irvine, 69, has died.

Via The Detroit Free Press:

"Former Detroit Pistons coach George Irvine has died. He was 69.The Indiana Pacers announced the death Tuesday morning. Irvine coached nearly 200 games for the Pacers in the 1980s before working in the front office.Irvine compiled a 46-60 record in 1 1/2 seasons coaching the Pistons but was fired by then president of basketball operations Joe Dumars following the 2000-01 season. The Seattle Times reported Irvine had a five-year battle with cancer. Irvine, who is from Washington state and played college basketball at Washington, had been living in Seattle. He first became a head coach with the Pacers in 1984. He went 48-116 in two seasons and later returned as the Pacers interim coach in 1988-89. He finished his head coaching career with a record of 100-190."

Beyond the name, I know very little about Irvine. Unfortunately, he coached before my time so I don’t have much to offer in terms of a favorite moment, or a story.

Next: If the Pistons land the top pick, how do they proceed to build the team?

That said, my prayers go out to Irvine’s family in this difficult time.
