Seth Curry will go into free agency looking for more money and playtime. Is he the answer for the Detroit Pistons to put them on the next level?

The Detroit Pistons will go into free agency in desperation mode to sign a backup point guard. Their backup point guard for the last three seasons had been Ish Smith.

Ish Smith was a solid backup point guard for the Pistons. He signed a three-year 21 million dollar deal with the Pistons in the 2016 off-season. He played a total of 219 games with the Pistons and started a total of 67 games due to injuries that sidelined Reggie Jackson.

In his tenure with the Pistons, he put up averages of 9.8 points per game and 4.5 assists on 45.3 percent from the field. Great numbers for a backup point guard. But the knock on him that set him from a great backup point guard to a solid backup point guard had always been his three-point shooting

He shot 31.4 percent from three on only 1.6 attempts a night. In his final season with the Pistons, he shot 2.4 threes a night. But he failed to capitalize on those attempts; shooting 32.6 percent.

The Pistons are willing to let Ish Smith walk this off-season to bring in a backup point guard that can shoot the ball. One of those potential free agents is Seth Curry.

Seth Curry finished a great season with the Portland Trailblazers playing the backup point guard behind all-star Damian Lillard. He played a total of 18.9 minutes per game in 74 games with the Blazers.

Seth averaged 7.9 points per game on a blistering hot 45 percent shooting from three. That was good enough to rank him the third best three-point shooter percentage wise in the entire league. Only Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets and Danny Green of the Toronto Raptors shot better.

Similar to his brother the 2x Most Valuable Player and 3x NBA Champion Steph Curry, Seth Curry can also shoot the ball from three. He is shooting 43.9 percent from three on 686 career attempts.

Both Curry brothers are facing off in the Western Conference Finals in a race to the NBA Finals. The Warriors are currently up 3-0 against the Blazers. Seth has struggled shooting the ball against his brother’s team. He’s averaging 8 points on 31.8 percent shooting.

But this is also his first post-season appearance of his career. And he is playing the team with a top defense and overall the best team in the entire NBA.

Is he the answer?

The Pistons biggest weakness in the season and playoffs had been their three-point shooting. They took a lot of threes. And they missed a lot of threes. This was due to incapability from the players to hit their shots.

The Pistons struggled to cash in on wide open three-point attempts during the season and playoffs. In fact other than Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, and Wayne Ellington for less than half a season, no other Pistons player found a rhythm on wide open threes.

Langston Galloway struggled to hit his wide open threes. He shot 34.7 percent and continued his woes during the playoffs. Reggie Bullock was the Pistons best three-point shooter before being traded away to the Los Angeles Lakers. But he even struggled on wide open threes; shooting under 40 percent on his attempts.

Reggie Jackson was by far the most consistent shooter on wide open threes. He shot 44.9 percent on 3.3 attempts per night. A lot of this was due to Blake Griffin passing out of the post to the open shooter.

Having Seth Curry on the roster could do the same. Seth shot 51.4 percent on wide open threes! The Portland Trail Blazers did not have a low post guy that could really collapse the defense. His shot attempts could go up with the Pistons with Blake Griffin collapsing the defense.

Seth Curry isn’t going to help the Pistons win a championship. And he probably wont be enough of an impact to take them to the Eastern Conference Finals. But he is the next building block for the Pistons to make a push for the second round.
