Stefanski brings 20 years of front office experience with him to the Detroit Pistons.  Now he’s tasked with choosing the next president and head coach.

The Detroit Pistons have hired Ed Stefanski as a senior advisor, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Wojnarowski also reports that Stefanski will now lead the organization’s search for a new president of basketball operations and head coach.

The 64-year-old previously served as the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers from 2007 to 2011.  He was then brought in by the Toronto Raptors to be the executive vice president of basketball operations in 2011; a position he held until 2013.

Stefanski’s most recent gig with the Memphis Grizzlies began in 2014, when he was named the vice president of player personnel.  He arrives in Detroit on a three-year deal, and will report directly to Tom Gores.

Early reports indicate that former Raptors’ head coach Dwane Casey is at the top of the list.  Stefanski was part of the group that originally hired Casey back in Toronto.

Casey was fired shortly after his team was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2018 NBA playoffs.  He led the Raptors to a franchise-record 59 wins this past season.

Interestingly enough, Stefanksi played under the late Chuck Daly at the University of Pennsylvania from 1973-1976.
