Detroit native and former Detroit Pistons point guard Kay Felder has been signed by the Toronto Raptors. Did they make a mistake by letting him go?

The Detroit Pistons never really gave Kay Felder a shot last season when they were thin at point guard. He now has a new home.

Felder signed a deal with the Raptors yesterday. It’s a one-year deal worth $1.57 million. He will provide depth at the point guard position for the Raptors.

Many remember Felder and his days at Oakland University. He ripped through the Horizon League before entering the 2016 NBA draft after his junior season.

He averaged 24 points and nine assists per game in his final season with the Golden Grizzlies. Felder’s numbers haven’t been so impressive since coming to the league.

He had an impressive stint in the G-League during the 2016-2017 season in Canton. Felder averaged 29 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field.

The Detroit native didn’t see much of the court when he signed a two-way deal with the Pistons. He played in just six minutes of action with them.

The Pistons parted ways with him after last season which made him an unrestricted free agent. They decided to go in a different direction at the point guard position.

The Detroit Pistons signed free agent Jose Calderon to be their third point guard on the roster. He’s the safer bet at that position.

There’s a certain risk-reward factor with Kay Felder that Calderon doesn’t have. Felder hasn’t really been given an opportunity, meaning no one knows what he is truly capable of.

He’s shown flashes of being a score-first point guard that every team in the league seems to be looking for. He will be joining a Raptors squad that will be looking to win now. Felder will be in a reserve role behind the likes of All-Star Kyle Lowry.

Who is to say he will not grow into a fantastic role player for the Raptors?
