Detroit Pistons: 8 possible offseason targets from the Brooklyn Nets
Detroit Pistons: Offseason targets on the Brooklyn Nets
Patty Mills: Player option
Patty Mills would be great fit on the Pistons as a veteran guard who is still very productive and shot 40 percent from long range this season. Mills has a player option for $6.1 million and if he is smart, he’ll waive it and sign a deal somewhere else. Mills came to Brooklyn to chase a ring and there are any number of contending teams that would love to have his services, so he can probably get more if he hits the market. He’s very unlikely to come to Detroit, even though he would be a nice fit, as Mills is firmly in the “ring chaser” phase of his career and I don’t blame him.
Seth Curry: Expiring contract
Curry is entering the final year of a deal that pays him $8.4 million, a reasonable price tag for a guy who shot 42 percent from 3-point range on high volume. He’s not expensive and fits with their stars, so I can’t see the Nets trading him unless they had another target in mind and needed to clear some cap space. He’s another guy who would be a great fit on the Detroit Pistons, who desperately need shooting.
Joe Harris: Trade target
If there is one contract the Nets would love to get off, it’s Harris’, which pays him $18 and $19 million in the next two seasons. When healthy, Harris is one of the best shooters in the NBA, but he only played 14 games this season and is also on the wrong side of 30. This Nets team is OLD, old and the only way they are going to move Harris at this point is to attach an asset. The Pistons would probably consider eating that contract with their cap space if there were significant assets attached, but I am not sure what those would be, as their future picks all have barriers and their only good young player is about to be a free agent.
Goran Dragic: Unrestricted free agent
The Detroit Pistons are already likely to have a veteran backup point guard in Cory Joseph (if he doesn’t get traded). Dragic still has a little game left at age 35, but I can’t see him wanting to join the Detroit Pistons at this stage of his career and the feeling is mutual.
Kyrie Irving: Player option
HELL NO.
No. No, just no. I’ve had several Pistons’ fans throw his name out there, and trading him might be the only way the Nets can improve next season. Irving is a transcendent talent and in my opinion a top 10-15 point guard of all time, but he is also a one dimensional ball hog and one of the biggest head cases in the league who brings a ton of baggage and negative attention.
Hard pass.
