Will the new year bring big changes to the Detroit Pistons?

There have been three major holidays since the Detroit Pistons last won a game and fans are hoping that the new year brings big changes.

At this point, any change at all would be viewed as a positive, as things can't get any worse and Detroit could at least start to rid itself of the stench of this losing streak.

It's hard to imagine a team coming back from this, at least in its current form, so will we see some big changes soon?

The head coach

Monty Williams initially turned down the Pistons' offer to coach them and it shows. He has coached like a guy who is learning his team on the fly and was ill-prepared to use the roster he has. Regardless of the reason, he hasn't been able to find an answer for this and has made head-scratching moves with Jaden Ivey and Ausar Thompson.

The Pistons probably should have considered that the man wanted to take a year off and it took a boatload of money to convince him to coach. But Williams signed a massive contract that is fully guaranteed, so he's not going anywhere.

There have been things to criticize about Monty's approach, rotations and how he has used his young players, but it's hard to put this on him, and he'll be given opportunities to turn it around.

The front office

Troy Weaver has been on the hot seat with fans for a while, but that hasn't necessarily transferred to owner Tom Gores, who didn't sound like a guy about to fire his GM in a recent Q&A.

"Change is coming. I’m just saying that in terms of Monty, Troy, all of that stuff … they will be in place, but I’m all over them. They’ll tell you that too. There’s a lot of accountability that needs to be held. There might be additions to staff and all of that stuff. What’s for sure is that change is coming. We’re not right, right now. We have to add and delete. We’re on it already. We will make changes. We will make them. We don’t know exactly what they’ll be yet."

Weaver seems safe for now, but what about the rest of the front office? Does Arn Tellum survive this? Ed Stefanski? Their fingerprints are on this too. Will anyone get fired?

I tend to doubt it at this point, as Tom Gores seems to have faith that Weaver is the guy to turn this around.

I don't expect any big shift in the front office, at least not until the end of the season, but as this losing streak continues, you do get a sense that a front-office cleanout is on the table at some point.

The roster

With the trade deadline not until February, we may have to wait for the big roster changes that are very likely to happen.

The Pistons should clean house as much as possible, as they have seven players on expiring contracts anyway and may as well get anything they can for them.

If Detroit can cobble together a deal to get a league-average veteran power forward, center or point guard, they should. If they can make a splashy trade, do it. If you can't, just start unloading, as there is not much on this team worth salvaging.

I'd be dabbling in trades for Jaden Ivey to see what that market looks like. They should get Bogdanovic's name out there as much as possible to potentially start the bidding war they should have had last season.

All expiring deals should be on the table, basically, anyone not named Cade Cunningham, and all moves going forward should be to build a roster that complements him.

We may not see the changes in the coaching staff and front office that some fans are hoping for, but the roster will get shuffled one way or another.

We often hear that teams shouldn't make changes "just to make them" but this is a case where any change at all would be a step in the right direction.
