Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports on Josh Smith:

"Smith will sign a one-year deal with the Rockets for the biannual exception"

  • The Rockets will pay Smith: $2,077,000
  • This will get Smith an additional: $1,446,741
  • The Pistons can reduce the amount they pay Smith this year by: $630,259

That reduction in what the Pistons will pay him, called the set-off, also reduces their cap hit by the same amount. That savings is nice, but it probably won’t make much difference to anything besides Tom Gores’ wallet. The Pistons likely won’t need the extra cap room this season.

Smith’s next contract after this deal with Houston will determine how much the Pistons can set off in future seasons.
