Stan Van Gundy questioned his own ability to coach after the Pistons’ poor start.

Did his boss, too?

Pistons owner Tom Gores, via Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News:

"“Never. You got that on the record? Never,” Gores said when asked if he’d questioned the hire at some point. “We have an amazing guy and I’m so glad we got him in Detroit.”"

I would have said Van Gundy’s five-year, $35 million contract made this irrelevant, but Gores just agreed to pay Josh Smith more than $36 million to go away. Gores also fired Maurice Cheeks 50 games into the coach’s tenure. So, let’s just call this mostly irrelevant.

Gores is committed to Van Gundy and has no choice but to remain so after handing him keys to the franchise.
