Top 10 Detroit Pistons draft picks of all-time
10. Greg Monroe (2010, first round, seventh overall)
Career Stats: 14.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals
Things may not have ended well for Monroe’s tenure with the Pistons, but he was a model of consistency for the organization during his five seasons in Detroit, averaging at least 15 points and nine rebounds every season after his rookie year.
The problem with Monroe’s long-term prospects with the Pistons is that he didn’t fit well with Andre Drummond, nor did he have the superstar ceiling that Drummond possesses.
He also burned the organization by accepting a qualifying offer which took the power out of the Pistons’ hands to retain him.
The Pistons couldn’t trade Monroe without him agreeing to it, and the qualifying offer made it unlikely that he’d choose the Pistons over a big market team (ironically he ended up with the division rival Milwaukee Bucks).
It may have been an ugly end to what was a pretty uneventful tenure in Detroit (the Pistons never made the playoffs during Monroe’s five seasons in Detroit), but hey it’s not like the Pistons passed on a superstar like Paul George or anything right (gulp)?
Monroe signed with the Milwaukee Bucks last offseason and is averaging 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds–basically on par with his statistics every season after his rookie campaign. Monroe may never be more than what he is now, but a guy who puts up 15 and 10 every year is a very good way to spend a draft pick.
Next: Andre Drummond
