Top 10 Detroit Pistons draft picks of all-time
4. Grant Hill (1994, first round, third overall)
Career stats: 16.7 points, 4.1 assists, 6 rebounds, 1.2 steals (six seasons with the Pistons)
The Pistons were bad when Hill played for them, but fans still had a reason to tune in because of Hill’s immense talent.
Hill dominated right out of the gate averaging 19.9 points, 5.0 assists, and 6.4 rebounds, earning co-rookie of the year and an all-star appearance in his rookie season.
While Hill’s NBA career couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, severe injuries nearly ended his career. In a way, Hill’s career really began, and ended with the Pistons. According to Hill, his ankle problems started in mid-March in his final season with the Pistons in 1999-2000.
At the time, Hill says the Pistons’ medical staff told him that MRI’s indicated a bone bruise on his ankle. As it turns out, his ankle was actually broken. Of course, Hill didn’t find this out until after he had played on it for three quarters in a playoff game against the Miami Heat.
Had it not been for the series of injuries that severely diminished his athletic abilities–and you know, him leaving the Pistons–Hill might be in the conversation for top-three Pistons of all-time, even without a championship.
