Rudy Gay would be a nice addition to the Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons could use an upgrade at powerforward. Rudy Gay could be a player that could upgrade the position for the Pistons, and may be available.

The Sacramento Kings are willing to trade Rudy Gay, according to Marc Stein, “for a quality player”.

But what would it take to pry Gay away from the Kings? I played around on ESPN’s Trade Generator machine and found a deal that might something both teams would go for.

Bradford Doolittle of ESPN also likes the prospects of adding Gay to the Pistons.

Here’s what he had to say about the prospects of the Pistons adding Gay:

"The Pistons lack shot creators up and down the roster and get very little out of isolation. While iso-ball isn’t Van Gundy’s bag, it’s still a tool every team needs. Gay would become Detroit’s best one-on-one player. He could play the 3 and the 4 — as does Marcus Morris — while Stanley Johnson swings between 2 and 3.The idea is to surround the Reggie Jackson-Andre Drummond foundation with length, shooting and versatility."

I like Gay for the Pistons for all of the reason’s Doolittle listed.

The Pistons would be giving up a quality player in Jennings who at his best, is a very good offensive weapon.

He also has a friendly contract, as the Kings could part with him after the season if things don’t go well. Then again, Jennings contract could play against the Pistons as the Kings have said that they would like to acquire a player that won’t be a free agent after the season.

The Kings would also get Gay’s replacement in Ersan Ilyasova who does have a contract that they could pick up after the season, and a young, cap friendly player in Hilliard, who could turn into a very good role player someday.

Not only would the Pistons be receiving an upgrade in Gay, but they would also be getting a proven point guard in Darren Collison who would be locked up after this season–thus avoiding the prospects of losing Jennings for nothing after the season ends entirely.

I’m not thrilled about losing Hilliard, he’s not an established player, but he could turn into a very good one. This is all hypothetical anyway, so maybe they wouldn’t have to part with him if a deal were to be struck between the two teams.

Either way, I hope the Pistons look into acquiring Gay as he could provide situational scoring that the Pistons have desperately lacked when the pick-and-role bogs down.
