Likeliest point guard prospects to end up on Detroit Pistons
By David Topham
Dejounte Murray | PG/SG | 6’5” | 170 lbs | Washington
Last season: 16.1 ppg, 4.4 apg, 6.0 rpg, 1.8 spg, 3.2 turnovers, .416 fg%, .288 3pfg%
Draft range: 10-35, hard to tell if he will be available
Why he fits in Detroit: Murray is a score-first combo guard that could make an impact as a high-volume scorer for an NBA second unit in the near future.
One of the more divisive players in this year’s class, mock drafts have Dejounte Murray going anywhere from pick 10 to the early second round. A one-and-done 19-year-old, Murray has all the physical tools and basketball skills needed to succeed at the next level, but he has a long way to go in terms of decision-making and shot selection.
Murray is not an efficient shooter. He settles for horrible shots. He turns the ball over too much. He whips long passes that have no chance of making it through the defense. And he gets himself caught in the air with nowhere to go (so he throws up a bad shot or rockets a terrible pass).
Yet, he also might be exactly what the Pistons need off the bench. Murray is a natural ball handler who loves to attack the rim. He’s great at finishing in traffic and he also has a smooth floater. His length allows him to finish his shot well above the arms of the defender.
At 6’5”, Murray should be able to play both the one and the two in the NBA. His versatility, aggressiveness, and natural scoring ability would make him an ideal fit for the Pistons. While there are some serious concerns, I think Murray’s upside is far too great to ignore. I can see him becoming an impact player in no time at all, which makes him an interesting candidate.
