Piston Powered founder Dan Feldman and Nate Duncan got together on the Dunc’d On podcast to discuss the Detroit Pistons offseason and cap situation.
The Detroit Pistons were the topic of the day in the later stages of Friday’s edition of the Dunc’d On podcast, hosted by Nate Duncan. His guest was the founder of Piston Powered, Dan Feldman, now of Pro Basketball Talk on NBC Sports. They discussed the coming free agency period and the Pistons’ cap situation, as both are NBA salary cap experts.

They hit on the fact that Andre Drummond was not signed to an extension this past season, and laid out clearly why that is. If Drummond was signed to an extension, his whole salary for the coming season would count against the 2016-17 salary cap, while if the Pistons wait to resign him until after they tend to the rest of their needs in free agency, his cap hold of $8.2 million will be the only thing that counts against the cap this season.
The point guard situation was also a big topic of conversation. The consensus was that Steve Blake should be the third point guard on the roster if he does come back somehow next season. Former Piston and fan favorite Brandon Jennings is Feldman’s choice for backup point guard signing, while Nate Duncan is intrigued by the idea of throwing every possible bit of the Pistons’ cap space at Jeremy Lin.
The downside of Lin is that he can probably start for a decent number of teams in the NBA, and many teams are going to be able to (although perhaps not willing) to offer him a contract worth the $12-16 million the Pistons might offer him in this scenario, and being the clear backup for the Pistons may not appeal to him.
Another possibility at point guard for the Pistons that was mentioned was Seth Curry. We’ll be covering the specifics of how that might work right here on Piston Powered in the near future.
