The NBA draft lottery is scheduled to take place on May 16th, and the Detroit Pistons will have the 12th pre-lottery slot.

The NBA draft lottery is an important event for teams outside the playoffs as they are left at the mercy of the ping pong balls to decide their NBA draft positioning. The Detroit Pistons finished the season with the 12th worst record in the NBA at 37-45.

As a result, they have the 12th best odds of getting the number one overall pick with a 0.7 percent chance.  They have a 0.8 percent chance of getting the second pick and a 1 percent of winning the third pick.

This makes up about a 2.5 percent chance at a top three overall pick. At 93.5 percent, the most likely scenario is for the Pistons to get the 12th pick.  They also have under a 4 percent chance of falling back to pick number 13 or 14 in the draft.

Most NBA personnel regard this as a deep draft so they Pistons could have some better options to choose from than in past years.   On the other hand, a late lottery pick in a deeper draft could be a tad more valuable if the Pistons decide to use it in a trade.

The largest upset in NBA draft lottery history was in 1993, when the Orlando Magic won the lottery with a 1.5 percent chance and selected Chris Webber. The Pistons have never won the lottery making them one of twelve teams to have never won since it was introduced in 1985.

Pistons number one pick here we come!

Sigh……you’re right, the Pistons would never get that lucky.
