The Detroit Pistons and Stanley Johnson kicked around the idea of adding him to the Orlando Summer League squad this year. As it turns out, Johnson and Stan Van Gundy have elected to spent his time elsewhere this offseason.

Stanley Johnson has looked terrific in his two Orlando Summer League stents. It looks like his time in Orlando has come to a close, according to Stan Van Gundy.

Via Detroit Free Press:

After sitting down with the second-year Piston in the season-ending exit meeting, Van Gundy says they have chosen to embark on a different course.

“I think what we might do with him is – and he talked it about when he left – go down and practice with us,” Van Gundy said. “(Reggie) Bullock did it with us last year. Go down and practice, but not anything else.”

Stanley Johnson looked great in Summer League last year. He looked beefy, quick, and his shot-making and dribble game looked much improved.

It really wasn’t until he had that weird foot injury where he was wearing bad shoes and argued with the staff that his game looked to have taken a step back.

Playing summer league or not playing summer league, either way it doesn’t really make a difference to me. I think his issue is getting consistent opportunity and keeping his confidence up. Those two things, are interrelated.

With the Pistons coming off of a disappointing season, I’m hoping Stan Van Gundy turns to his second and third year players a little more.
