The Detroit Pistons made official a new logo this afternoon in downtown Detroit, ending months of speculation and behind-the-scenes work.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Detroit Pistons have finally made official their new logo. Tuesday afternoon the Pistons brought the show on the road to Campus Martius in downtown Detroit to make the big announcement.
“The Detroit Pistons’ new primary logo celebrates the club’s long-standing history in the Detroit sports community, stays true to our brand and reflects a modern design for our future,” said Charlie Metzger, executive vice president and chief marketing and communications officer for the Pistons. “As our organization begins a new chapter in downtown Detroit, this new logo links the franchise’s rich championship lineage with our exciting prospects for the future.”

Metzger went on to elaborate on the design process. “It started with a clean slate, and we wanted to look at the history and we wanted to look at everything we’ve done. But at the end of the day, we felt very much that we’ve got that pride, we’ve got that logo. We wanted to contemporize it obviously to reflect this year’s team and the next chapter.” He continued, “That was the inspiration. You see some of the changes we’ve made, some of the groove lines and that font which is consistent with what our players are wearing. And that outside chrome is consistent with the Motor City and what we’ve got going on here.”
Andre Drummond was also on hand for the event and gave his thoughts on the new logo. “It’s a little bit of our new and a little bit of the city’s old. It’s got a little bit of an old-school and new-school feel to it.” Drummond went on to say, “It’s a dope logo, so I’m really excited to see what it looks like on the floor and on our jerseys.”
The logo was unveiled by a painter, complete with DJ and violinist, in front of a lunch-time crowd gathering at Campus Martius. The area is surrounded by tech and financial businesses, including Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans, and the crowd grew quickly once they saw what was going on.
The Pistons struck on a great opportunity for a rebranding, even if it was a subtle change. While the general structure of the logo is very similar to that of the 1980’s (and earlier) Pistons, the font is modernized and updated. It’s nostalgiac from a previous era of greatness, all with a hint of the present and future.

The Detroit Pistons will begin playing at their new home in midtown Detroit at Little Caesars Arena this fall, sharing the venue as equal partners with the Detroit Red Wings. They’ll join the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions in the area. All four teams will be based within a six block area for the first time in the city’s history.
