With recent reports stating that Darrun Hilliard will not participate in the Detroit Pistons Summer League team, is this an indication that we won’t see Hilliard suit up for the Detroit Pistons again?

Per Rod Beard of The Detroit News:

Firstly let’s clarify a few things here, his contract becomes fully guaranteed if he is not waived before the 1st of July, so it will be a nervous few weeks for Darrun Hilliard. However with a reported salary of roughly $1.4 million, it won’t really free up a lot of cap space. What it would do is free up a roster spot for the Detroit Pistons to take a chance on an undrafted prospect, or potentially take back two players with one player going out in a trade scenario.

On a team lacking a true backup shooting guard, he only managed to play in 39 games and averaged 9.8 minutes per game when he did play. He averaged 3.3 points per game and less than 1 assist and rebound while shooting 37.3 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from three-point range.

What do the Detroit Pistons have to lose by taking a chance on an undrafted prospect? It’s fairly likely that any prospect we are able to sign would be able match the output that Hilliard had.

For a player to have played 77 games in his NBA career and not play in his team’s summer league, it may be unusual. To me this is a clear indication that Darrun Hilliard will not be a Detroit Piston after July 1st or if not before. The Detroit Pistons are not in a situation where they can just wait around to develop prospects, they need to make things happen. Hilliard has had two seasons and shown very little, so it’s time for him to be waived.
