In a new series for the upcoming year, I answer reader questions as acting General Manager of the Detroit Pistons. Send me your questions @shamshammgod on Twitter and use the hashtag #ShamGM to be included on the next edition of the series.

Stepping into my new office at Little Caesar’s Arena, there is a renewed sense of spirit emenates from the glistening new hardwood floor that has found its place in the heart of the Motor City. I’m sitting in my comfortable chair facing the window with the sun peering in through the blinds and bouncing off of my shiny, cherry-finished desk, I breathe in the smells of a new NBA season. My fidgety assistant, Duncan Smith, hands me the trade offers for the Detroit Pistons and scenarios of the day:

Kyrie Irving – Detroit Piston?

Now although this first offer was not specifically guided towards me, but rather my assistant, I felt the need to include it in the inaugural edition of ShamGM Mailbag.

More from PistonPowered

In this trade, the Orlando Magic receive embattled point guard, Reggie Jackson and Jon Leuer, and the Cavaliers receive Nikola Vucevic, Elfrid Payton, and Stanley Johnson. My Detroit Pistons receive the crown jewel in the trade, Kyrie Irving, as well as Terrence Ross in this scenario, but unfortunately must give up our 2018 first round pick to the Cavaliers.

At first glance, I’m surprised that this trade has crossed my desk because it seems as though the Cavaliers are giving up too much for very little value in return. The Cavaliers are requesting a combination of “win-now” players and strong future assets, in exchange for Kyrie Irving. This trade isn’t enough for them to want to pull this trigger.

From a Detroit Pistons perspective, Detroit would receive Kyrie Irving, who’s a wizard with the basketball but there is no guarantee that he will extend his contract beyond two years. Detroit would also get the chance to unload large contracts in Leuer and Jackson, but must give up Stanley Johnson in return. I would accept this trade, but I think Cleveland would reject this trade in a heartbeat.
