San Antonio Spurs sign former Piston Darrun Hilliard

The San Antonio Spurs have come to an agreement with former Detroit Pistons’ guard Darrun Hilliard, signing him to a two-way contract which will place him in the G League.
It was no surprise when the Detroit Pistons parted ways with third-year guard Darrun Hilliard earlier this summer. He had a nonguaranteed contract and it was expected to be a foregone conclusion the team would waive him before free agency began, but instead they traded him to the Houston Rockets, who traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers, who they waived him.
Hilliard stayed busy this summer, winning FIBA gold with the American national team and current Piston forward Derek Willis. He appeared in all five games of the tournament, averaging 13.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. He shot just 40.3 percent from the floor.
Hilliard caught the eye of the San Antonio Spurs organization, who signed him on Monday to a two-way contract. The two-way contract allows a G League player to spend up to 45 days at the NBA level, getting paid at an NBA minimum salary.
The bulk of his play is expected to be with the Spurs affiliate, the Austin Spurs of the G League. He has limited experience in the G League having played just seven games with the Pistons’ affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, in his two-year career.

In two seasons with the Pistons, Hilliard averaged less than four points per game and averaged just under 10 minutes per appearance. He played in 77 games in a Piston uniform.
