5. Win an NBA championship

Go ahead, start laughing.

But if a player’s main goal entering each season isn’t  to win an NBA title, then what are we even doing here?

Setting a goal doesn’t mean it’ll happen. The Detroit Pistons probably won’t be the 2018 NBA Champions. Fans can think that. The media can think that. But if the players or coaches think that? Well, then the season is over before it begins.

Smith won’t be a failure if the Detroit Pistons aren’t hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy come June. Detroit will win as a team, and they’ll lose as a team. But just because the outcome is unlikely, doesn’t mean it’s not worth chasing.

Whether it’s LeBron James or Ish Smith, each player is working towards the same goal.
