Grand Rapids Drive to hold open tryouts for 2017-18 season on October 1
Are you a talented basketball player waiting for their one shot to play professionally? Do you think you have what it takes to play for the Detroit Pistons or the Grand Rapids Drive?
On Sunday, you may get that chance to prove yourself. The Detroit Pistons and the Drive, Detroit’s NBA G League affiliate, will be hosting an open tryout this Sunday, Oct. 1.
Tryouts will be taking place at MSA Woodland, located at 2100 28th St SE in Grand Rapids, Mich., starting at 9 a.m. EST under the direction of first-year head coach Rob Werdann.
Doors are set to open for registration at 8 a.m.
For those who did not make the team’s Sept. 24 pre-registration deadline, interested players can still register at the door for $150, subject to availability. Only 150 players will get the chance to try out.
The tryout is closed to the public per request of the Detroit Pistons, according to the Drive’s Facebook account.
Jonathon Simmons‘ NBA career got started in this manner, paying $150 for an open tryout with the San Antonio Spurs’ NBA D-League affiliate, then the Austin Toros. He won a spot and made it to the Spurs where he was a contributor in both the regular season and playoffs.
After two league-minimum salaried seasons with the Spurs, he was signed to a three-year, $20 million contract with the Orlando Magic this past summer.
So, will you leave with a contract in hand, or will you go home with just a free t-shirt? The only way to find out is by taking part.
