Five goals for Henry Ellenson in the 2017-18 season
2. Attack, attack, attack
Despite all of his potential as a shooter, Ellenson’s 6’11” frame and ball handling ability shouldn’t go to waste.
Defenders rarely closed out on him last season. This gave Ellenson plenty of space in front of him. Instead of using his dribble to attack the basket, he usually settled for a mid range jump shot. That’s what the defense was hoping for.
Until his jumper is respected, oppononets will continue to sag off of Ellenson. So why not use his length as an advantage? It’s hard to contain penetration from a 6’11” forward without fouling him. Opposing teams found that out the hard way last year.
Take a look at some of the highlights in the video below.
Being aggressive and driving in the lane pays off. Ellenson had no trouble finishing at the rim last season. But unless it came on a fast break, he was timid to challenge his man off the dribble.
Hesitancy is expected from rookies. They’re still adjusting to the speed and flow of the NBA. This season should be different though. Ellenson has played with more confidence since the end of last year. He showed it in Summer League, and is currently showing it in preseason.
Now it must translate to the regular season.
