Five goals for Reggie Bullock in the 2017-18 season
2. Create for himself
There’s no questioning Bullock’s ability to spot up and shoot. But a small forward is also responsible for creating his own shot off the dribble.
The ability is there. It just depends on whether or not Bullock will continue to settle for jumpers.
Take a look at the highlights below. Most of his points come off of catch-and-shoot opportunities. In other words, he needs to be set up (usually by a screen) in order to score the basketball.
While you can’t knock a guy for taking clean looks, there comes a time when he has to take advantage of the open space in front of him. It’s in situations like these where Bullock needs to penetrate inside and challenge the defense.
We’ve seen flashes of what he can do when he attacks the basket. Not only does penetration offer a higher-percentage shot, it also gives him a better chance at getting to the free throw line. Detroit was 29th in the NBA when it came to free throw attempts per game (19.3).
Again, he doesn’t have to eliminate his catch-and-shoot strategy. That’s Bullock’s bread and butter. But diversifying his offensive arsenal will help keep the defense on their toes.
