Detroit Pistons Forward, Jon Leuer, has missed all of November with a sprained ankle. On Monday, news broke that he received an injection into his left ankle.

The Detroit Pistons, losers of their last three games, have been without Forward Jon Leuer since Halloween with a sprained left ankle.

While news when the injury occurred implied that Leuer’s absence would be common for sprained ankles, the recovery timeline thus far has proven that it may be more complicated than initially thought.

On Monday, news broke that Jon Leuer received a joint lubrication injection for his sprained left ankle. Leuer will be evaluated in two weeks to determine the progress of his rehab, according to Detroit News’ Rod Beard.

News broke the week of Thanksgiving that Jon Leuer was going to solicit a second opinion for his sprained ankle. This may be the result of that second opinion, although nothing has been confirmed.

The type of injection that Jon Leuer received is called a hyaluronate injection and it is intended to mimic the fluid that exists in the body that surrounds joints.

Although the injection is intended for joint relief in those with arthritis, it has shown great success for extreme cases of ankle sprains. One study (cited below) showed that 52.5 percent of patients returned to disability-free sport after eight days, 84 percent after thirty days, and 100 percent ninety days following the injection.

These results are very promising for at team that is in dire need for rebounding. Currently the Pistons rank 24th in rebounds, in spite of having the league’s best rebounder in Andre Drummond. Throughout Leuer’s career, Leuer has been an adequate rebounder and would serve to help in that capacity.

The Detroit Pistons take on the Milwaukee Bucks tonight at 8/7 PM CST at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
