Ice Cube’s BIG3 3-on-3 basketball league will make its way to Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit this summer.
This morning the BIG3 Basketball League announced that the 3-on-3 basketball league will be making its way to Little Caesars Arena on July 13th for Week 4 of the second season.
The BIG3 Basketball League features former NBA stars playing in a half court 3-on-3 style format. The BIG3 League had its inaugural season last summer and featured Hall of Fame players such as Charles Oakley, Gary Payton, and Julius Erving, as well as many social media darlings like Brian Scalabrine and Jason Williams.
The league is comprised of eight teams: 3’s Company, 3 Headed Monsters, Ball Hogs, Ghost Ballers, Killer 3s, Power, Trilogy, and Tri-State. Each team is coached by a Hall of Fame player, with some suiting up and playing as well. Every team has either a captain or co-captains as well.
The format is general 3-on-3 half-court basketball, with the addition of a “4 point zone” situated 30 feet from the basket in select spots on the court. The winner must score at least 50 points and lead by at least two points.
The Detroit Pistons have been well-represented in the BIG3 league last season. Chauncey Billups and Allen Iverson, both former Pistons who were traded for each other in 2008, were captains of their respective teams – Billups’ Killer 3s and Iverson’s 3’s Company. Iverson also served as a player-coach for his team.
Even the more obscure Pistons were represented last season like former member of the 2004 Goin’ to Work championship squad, Mike James and the more recent Piston, Corey Maggette.
Last season, the former Pistons forward Rick Mahorn-coached Trilogy squad went undefeated and capped off the season by winning the inaugural BIG3 championship.
The BIG3 Basketball League’s second season kicks off on June 22nd in Houston.
