What is the biggest position of need for the Detroit Pistons?

The Detroit Pistons struggled in a couple key areas last season. Which position needs the most help on their current roster?

DETROIT, MI – JANUARY 30: Stanley Johnson

The Detroit Pistons missed the playoffs for the second straight year. There are some glaring spots on this roster.

So, as of now, what is the biggest need on this team as of right now?

I ask that because a lot can happen between now and the end of the off-season. We aren’t even sure what the direction of the organization is right now.

There isn’t a head coach. Jeff Bower, the general manager of the Detroit Pistons, is likely on his way out when his contract expires in June.

Those are clearly important needs on this team. Those are top priority.

What I’m aiming at answering is based on the guys who are on the court night in and night out.

Small Forward

More from PistonPowered

James Ennis III is a free agent if the Pistons choose to not re-sign him. The only guy left on the depth chart at small forward is Stanley Johnson. Someone send help.

I think Johnson has improved his game since getting drafted by the Pistons. I don’t think he’s consistent enough to be a starter in this league right now.

Johnson averaged just eight points per game last season. He shot 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from three-point range.

When you can’t consistently get to the rack and score, you have to be able to shoot. Johnson can’t do that.

Between free agency and the draft, they need to address the issue of finding another small forward to add to the roster.

Point Guard

This has been the make-or-break position for the Detroit Pistons. I mean, the NBA is a point guard-driven league now. You have to have a great point guard if you’re going to contend for a championship in today’s NBA.

DETROIT, MI – APRIL 6: Ish Smith

Reggie Jackson hasn’t been able to stay healthy over the last couple of seasons. That’s the biggest reason why they’ve missed the postseason the last two seasons.

Ish Smith is an adequate back-up point guard at best. He’s clearly shown that he can’t be a starting point guard in this league and make the team around him succeed.

If they don’t re-sign either Dwight Buycks or Jameer Nelson, they will need to at least find a third point guard for their roster.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Pistons look elsewhere for a new starting point guard.

Leaving it up to you to decide

Change is coming to the Detroit Pistons. What kind of change? We might see a rebuild and an attempt to shed salary space.

On the other hand, new management might want to see this current roster make another run at competing when at full strength.

This roster could look a lot different depending on who the Pistons decide to re-sign and draft.

Putting all of that aside, what is the biggest position of need right now for the Detroit Pistons? Look, I need your help. I found two positions that I believe are in desperate need of an upgrade.
