It’s been a few weeks since Stan Van Gundy and the Detroit Pistons parted ways. The Pistons have yet to find a replacement for Van Gundy, and it leaves Piston fans getting antsy.

Too many people say the Detroit Pistons open position is not very appealing. With no cap space, and no first round pick in the upcoming NBA draft, they may have a point.

To go along with that, the Pistons are in questionable contracts (too many) with Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond, and Reggie Jackson.

While I am high on this team for next year, I am also very much in the minority.

However, one Piston player believes the next President of basketball operations will be taking over a “special” roster.

Ish Smith with high praise for the Detroit Pistons

Ish Smith was at Wayne State this week, where he was asked questions about the Pistons’ open position.

Smith said, “the roster that Stan has put together is pretty special.”

While you would expect a player on the team to utter such words, does Smith have a point?

Like I said earlier, I’m in the minority. I have high hopes for this team, and while I wouldn’t call them “special”, I would say interesting.

With Griffin and Drummond, you have an interesting pair for your two best players. Along with this, there’s question marks all over this team.

The unknown on this current roster

Can Jackson stay healthy? If Jackson gets hurt, who will replace him?

There was one recurring problem that Van Gundy had. How do you use Stanley Johnson?

Does the next President see how to use him? Will he run into the same problem Van Gundy ran into? Who knows.

Is Henry Ellenson ready to step in for Anthony Tolliver if/when he leaves? Will Reggie Bullock improve, or was last year an outlier?

Every team has questions heading into the off-season, unless you’re the Golden State Warriors. However, the Pistons seem to have many more than the average team.

I guess in a certain way, you can say the next President will be inheriting a “special” roster. Smith meant this in a different way, however.

Smith says, “… Talent wise, we were pretty special. We showed that. Beating OKC, beating Golden State, some of the top teams.”

The Pistons were playing some special basketball at the beginning of the year. That was with a healthy Jackson. Jackson’s health is at the top of the many questions the next President will have to deal with.

It’ll be very interesting to see how the Detroit Pistons will be handled. I’ll say this; the next President will be taking over a “special” or unique situation.
