Ku’s Ball Room has been gone for weeks, but he makes his return now to tackle whether firing Stan Van Gundy was the right move!
It has been a while since you guys, the loyal and brilliant followers of PistonPowered, got a video from Ku’s Ball Room.
Sickness stopped those videos from coming out the last few weeks, and trust me, it hurt everyone.
Ku’s Ball Room is back with a new video! There hasn’t been a video since before Stan Van Gundy was fired. So, it is only right that the Ball Room tackles that first, right?
Was firing Stan Van Gundy the right move?
The Detroit Pistons and Van Gundy mutually parted ways on May 7 and the Pistons are still looking for his replacement at head coach and President of basketball operations.
But, with one year left on his deal, many have wondered if this was even the right move.
Van Gundy was far from perfect in his time with the Pistons, but he did several good things for this franchise.
First and foremost, he gave this team a sense of stability it hadn’t felt since the times of the “Goin’ To Work” Pistons.
Van Gundy did really well when it came to winning trades. He brought in Tobias Harris, Marcus Morris, Avery Bradley, Anthony Tolliver, and Reggie Jackson in trades that didn’t involve giving up any core or important pieces.
Using Harris and Bradley, he brought Detroit all-star forward Blake Griffin. Griffin is under contract until 2022. The Pistons won’t have to worry about their star bouncing for a while.
Van Gundy also made a couple head-scratching moves. He signed Langston Galloway to a three-year deal worth $21 million. This signing put the Pistons in a position where they were unable to re-sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

He also signed Boban Marjanovic to a three year deal, also worth $21 million. While he was a fan favorite in Detroit, he rarely played and was no where near worth that contract.
Jon Leuer was signed by Van Gundy in his first off-season. Leuer signed a four year $42 million contract with the Pistons, and has struggled to bring the stretch four play he was paid to bring to Detroit. In 2018, this $10 million contract on the books looks terrible.
These were just a few examples to show Van Gundy did some good, and also did some bad.
But, should the bad have costed him his job with one year remaining on his contract?
Ku’s Ball Room has that answer for you!
