The Detroit Pistons are currently looking for their next head coach. Jason Kidd is not the guy to take the current roster to the next level.
The Detroit Pistons have had a lot of names floating around the organization as potential candidates for their next head coach. Jason Kidd is a name that has popped up in the last week.
Kidd’s coaching experience
His coaching career in the NBA started back in 2013 when he took the helm of the Brooklyn Nets.
This team had it’s ups and downs. It was a veteran group that featured Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry, and Joe Johnson.
They finished the 2013-2014 regular season with a record of 44-38. Brooklyn won their first-round series before losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat the very next round.
Kidd was then part of a bizarre trade that shipped him to Milwaukee where he started his second gig as the Bucks head coach. He took over a Milwaukee team that had lost 67 games the season before he arrived.
It was an experience to say the least with the Bucks. After his first season as head coach, the Bucks jumped up to 41 wins. He went 139-152 as their head coach before getting fired midway through this past season.
There were internal issues between Kidd and his team. Part of the reason the Bucks parted ways with him is because of how he “treated his players“.
Why the Detroit Pistons should pass on Kidd
There are some looming issues with hiring a guy like Jason Kidd as your next head coach. The first one starts with Kidd’s inability to get teams to take the step from relevant to competitive in today’s NBA.

The Bucks had a great core of players under Kidd. Yet, they were just one game over the .500 mark before being relieved of his duties.
They had two playoff appearances under Kidd and both ended in first-round departures.
The Bucks had some personnel issues which is an issue that was out of Kidd’s hands. Ultimately, Milwaukee should have been performing at a higher level.
This is an issue that’s very similar to what the Pistons had with the Stan Van Gundy.
They were relevant, just not competitive. Why would they bring in a guy that’s had the same exact problems as a coach?
The next issue with Jason Kidd was the disconnect he had with his team in Milwaukee. Why couldn’t that same exact issue arise with the Pistons if he were hired?
If a young team believes they’re being worked too much outside of their schedule, a more experienced group like the one in Detroit most likely wouldn’t tolerate that kind of treatment.
It seems like there would be a bigger disconnect with a veteran group in the same situation.
Overall, the Detroit Pistons can do better than Jason Kidd as a head coach.
